By the end of the 20th century, Portland was known as a dangerous port city, full of miners passing through the California gold rush and sailors. This representation continued with organized crime in the 1940s and 1950s; however, ships and other World War II productions brought an influx of jobs and investment to the city. In the 1960s, hippies traveling up the coast from San Francisco began to create a subculture of activism in the city. Now, Portland is known as a bastion of counterculture and has attracted many young adults, thanks in part to the technology industry that is located there. All of this makes for a city with its own history and culture that deserves its own sketch comedy series.
In fact, Portland has been the setting for a variety of TV shows and movies over the years, contributing to the city’s thriving movie house culture. You will find a collection of vintage cinemas showing not only modern films but also second and revival films. Its beautiful neon lights illuminate different areas and transport you to the cozy darkness of the theater. In addition to these movie theaters, there are live performance theaters and venues that have helped launch punk and rock music careers for decades. The magnificent architecture of these theaters is as much a part of the fabric of the city as the music scene is woven into Portland’s history.
Outdoor enthusiasts will also find plenty to do. Relatively dry summers and mild winters make this city an ideal environment for growing roses. Hence the nicknames Rose City and City of Roses. You can see roses all over the city, but if you’re into horticulture, you won’t want to miss a visit to the International Rose Test Garden. Created to accommodate European hybrid roses that gardeners feared would be destroyed by World War I bombs, today it is one of the country’s oldest rose gardens. You can find over 600 varieties of roses here, and if you have time, you can also check out the annual Portland Rose Festival. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, come to Portland during blooming season and see these beauties to remember for years to come.
If you like to hike, you can see the lush vegetation of the Pacific Northwest at Forest Park, the nation’s largest wilderness park located within city limits. Shaded trails await you in this park, the Hoyt Arboretum, and Mount Tabor, one of the most extinct volcanoes in the United States. You can also visit the smallest park in the world, Mills End Park, which is only two feet in diameter. If traveling isn’t your thing, check out the skateboarding—Portland has been described as one of the top skateboarding cities in the country. The entire city’s park system was ranked the best in the U.S. based on square footage and resident accessibility.
